Ghostec's FAQ Page  Lexicon  Photography Misidentification

1. Why carry extra batteries when ghost hunting?

A. Ghosts require energy to manifest themselves. Whether this energy is from batteries, or from heat (thermal energy) they require it to manifest.

2. What is a cold spot?

A. As explained above, heat is a form of energy, it's thermal energy, and when a spirit needs energy to manifest itself, they sometimes use this thermal energy. The resulting drop in temperature is what causes a cold spot. Cold spots are usually indicators of ghostly activity, and usually preceed an appearance.

3. Why use a thermometer to check the temperature?

A. It's good to get a baseline of the temperatures of an area before an investigation. Afterwards if the temperature fluctuates greatly it might indicate paranormal activity. We use non-contact infrared thermometers that allows us to take temperature readings from a distance, without having to phyiscally place a thermometer on a surface.

4. Why use EMF meters to check electromagnetic fields?

A. Spirits are Electromagnetic in nature, and as such use and affect Electromagnetic Fields. As with the thermometers, you can take the base readings of a place first and eliminate the obvious things that would normally raise the reading on the meter. Once the parameters are set, you can watch for a spike in the areas you are searching. A spike will usually mean ghostly activity. Remember, they have gathered all that energy to be there and you will surely get a spike on the meter in their presence.

5. What cameras are best to use?

A. There are diverse opinions on this. We use both 35mm and Digital Cameras. With 35mm cameras, you have the negative, but you need to make sure they are developed by a reputable place/person. Digital Cameras are convienent in that the image is immediately reviewable, and you can check to see if you got anything immediately. You can get results from an expensive 35mm camera or a disposable camera. Just know your camera well, and know it's limits as far as lights go.

6. Why should you speak in a normal voice while recording EVPs?

A. You should speak in a normal voice while recording EVPs because if someone whispers, then that whisper can sound very much like a true EVP when the recording is later analyzed.

7. I see lots of pictures of balls of light that are claimed to be ghosts. Is this true?

A. While true spirit orbs do exist, most people mistake dust, or pollen for a ghost. When taking a picture (with both film and digital cameras) dust can and does get between your subject and the lens. When the flash goes off it illuminates the dust or pollen, and thus it shows up as a bright object in your picture. Dust, pollen, insects, and moisture can all  show up like this. A true spirit orb is fairly solid, and emitting it's own light. Take care when you are taking pictures and note the environment before to make sure this isn't what you are getting. If you shine a flashlight beam in the dark and you see tons of dust or pollen particles, then odds are you will get tons of them in your pictures. Please see our page here for more information on misidentified objects in photographs.

8. Why should I not ghost hunt alone?

A. You should always have a partner with you for the physical dangers of where you investigate. If you are checking out a dark area, and accidentally trip and break your leg,  you want someone with you that can help you. Always carry a flashlight into dark areas, and you should also carry a cellphone just in case. You also want confirmation if you do see something. If you see a ghost alone there is no one there to back you up.

9. Why should I use video cameras that have infrared capabilites?

A. There is no definite answer to why ghosts seem to show up under infrared more often than normal light, but one theory suggests that as a spirit is manifesting itself, it becomes visible in the infrared spectrum before the normal light spectrum.
