The lexicon contains definitions to terms you may encounter when reading about the paranormal or paranormal investigations.

Haunting

When a spirit remains at a particular location, whether it be a house, land or what have you.

Active haunting

The classic ghost that everyone thinks of. The spirit is aware of itself and it's surroundings and may also seek to interact with you. Also known as an "intelligent haunting."

Residual haunting

A "psychic imprint" on the area, replaying certain past events over and over, can be at certain times and dates or totally random. The ghost version of a video tape. Sometimes called a "Place memory."

Poltergeist

German for "noisy ghost", a poltergeist is the physical manifestation of psychic energy, often the result of extreme emotional stress. Not a ghost per-say, but can produce ghost-like activity.

Orb

Balls of light that are believed to be related to spirit energy. Can be easily confused with dust, dirt, pollen, moisture and insects in photographs.

Ectoplasm

Often shortened to "ecto"; this is what is believed to be spirit energy that takes the form of mist, smoke or tendrils. Sometimes resembles smoke in photographs, hence why smoking is not allowed while we are on an investigation. May also be called a mist.

Cold spots

Ghosts use energy to physically manifest themselves, and one form of energy is heat (thermal energy). A cold spot can develop when the ghost uses this energy resulting in the chilling of the area.

EVP

Electronic Voice Phenomena, the recording of spirit voices onto a recording medium, whether it be magnetic tape or digital. At the time of the recording nothing is heard but on play back these voices might be audible, often with the assistance of audio software to amplify and filter the recording.

Infrared

A band of light before red in the light spectrum. Invisible to humans and most mammals, infrared light is often used in nightvision equipment. Investigations have shown that video or pictures taken in infrared light often pick up more than what we normally can see under normal light.

EMF

Electromagnetic Fields.  Ghosts emit and interfer with EMF energy, these changes are detectable with an EMF meter.

Vortex

Believed to be convergence points for spirtual and/or psychic energy. Unusual phenomenon often occur at them.

Shadow people

Spirits that take the form of shadowy figures. Often reported being seen out of the corner of people's eyes.
